The Print Settings I Wish Someone Had Told Me Sooner

3D printing has an enormous amount of genuinely overwhelming advice available online, most of it well-meaning and a fair amount of it more complicated than a beginner actually needs. If I could go back and tell myself just a handful of settings to focus on early, ignoring almost everything else for a while, here's exactly what I'd say.

Slow Down Your First Layer

Almost every frustrating print failure I had early on traced back to a rushed first layer that didn't adhere properly. Slowing the first layer down specifically, separate from your overall print speed, gives it time to bond properly to the bed before the rest of the print piles weight and momentum on top of a foundation that was never solid to begin with.

Get Genuinely Comfortable With Bed Levelling

Not just doing it once and hoping โ€” actually understanding what a properly levelled bed feels like and looks like during that first layer, so you can recognise when something's slightly off before committing hours to a print that was doomed from the very first pass. This is more valuable than any single material or printer upgrade I've made since.

Match Your Cooling to Your Material, Not Just Your Printer's Default

Different materials want genuinely different cooling profiles, and a lot of early frustration with warping or poor layer adhesion comes down to applying one generic cooling setting across materials that actually need quite different treatment. This was the single setting that took my print quality from "acceptable, but I'm not sure why some prints work and others don't" to "consistently good," more than any other single change I made.

Don't Trust a Generic Profile Blindly

Every printer, even within the same model line, has small individual quirks, and a generic settings profile downloaded from somewhere online is a genuinely good starting point, not a guaranteed perfect result. The willingness to make small, deliberate adjustments from a known starting point, rather than either blindly trusting a downloaded profile or guessing from total scratch, is the actual skill worth developing.

Test Small Before You Commit Big

A small test piece, printed in five or ten minutes, tells you almost everything you need to know before committing to a six-hour print on the same settings. I skipped this step constantly when I was starting out, impatient to see the actual final object, and it cost me far more wasted time and material than the small test prints ever would have.

What I'd Deliberately Not Worry About Early

Exotic materials, multi-colour setups, and the most advanced slicer settings can all wait. They're genuinely interesting once you've got the fundamentals solid, and genuinely overwhelming as a starting point, drowning out the few settings that actually matter most for a beginner under a sea of options that won't matter until much later.

Why This List Is Short on Purpose

I could list forty settings that matter to some degree. These five are the ones that, in my own experience and in watching other people learn, separate "constantly frustrated by failed prints for unclear reasons" from "mostly successful, with occasional understandable, diagnosable failures." Everything else is genuinely worth learning eventually. These are worth learning first, properly, before anything else competes for your attention.

The One Extra Thing I'd Add for Anyone Genuinely Stuck

Keep a simple, written log of what settings actually produced which result, on which material. It feels like overkill for the first few prints. Six months in, it's the single fastest way to stop relearning the same lesson repeatedly, because the answer to "what worked last time" is sitting in your own notes instead of buried somewhere in memory you can't quite trust.
